Playing footsie with Plasticorp
Met up with Val at Dark Wine and Roses to catch up with what she saw the other night. I brought along with me a nice little white noise generation device that was highly recommended on a private investigator forum I'm subscribed to, and I'd enhanced its capabilities a little bit via some Prime, Forces, and Minds. It's a temporary effect, but maybe this will be something I want to keep handy. Fortunately there were so few people at DWR that it didn't matter. I haven't been to DWR in years and years and years. Pretty much since that thaumavore killed the tiny little node that used to be present there. A shame, really.
Val's info dump about Plasticorp was fairly scary. It doesn't look like there's much out of ordinary in the realm, but Val couldn't find a way to get in. She'd hoped to find a broken/open window, but no such luck. And the front door had an electronic keypad lock that Val said she couldn't bypass--but that the garou have gifts that allow them to bypass these things. (Note to self: time to redo the sanctum's locks.) Val stepped sideways to the astral and saw many rusty spiders. Inside the building she saw a large bane (spirit of the Wyrm, which tend to have high levels of Entropic energy about them) that looked made of molten plastic. There was also some black liquidy stuff on the floor that seemed to be moving and/or have tendrils that could reach out. ("Glue trap" of sorts?) Downstairs was the piece de resistance: a red sheet of somethingorother that seemed to have faces with eyes and mouths sewn shut and which moved and gibbered and mentally attempted to invade her mind so she'd come to it. (Seriously? I'm going to have nightmares about just the description of this thing.) Val bolted at that point, barely making it out. She's insane for having done that on her own, but she claims it's what corax do--even though I think it scared even her.
We discussed what to do next. I'm going to (1) try to scan the people coming and going during shift changes to see if people seem to be corrupted spiritually/entropically from the place and, if so, which ones and how bad. (2) Do some web research to find out what Plasticorp does/sells, and then follow that up with some PI resources to investigate business records. (3) Check from afar to see if Crosby (the reporter that was shot in a drive-by after publishing a story about Plasticorp employees deaths/disappearances) is doing okay and hasn't been "gotten to" by Plasticorp via a Dreamwalk. (That'll be a good opportunity to practice some Mind magic, too. I didn't tell Val what I planned to do here as I suspect my ability to poke around in people's heads might freak her out. It'd freak me out if I were in her shoes.) 4) Val's going to take a second look at the windows to see if they open. If they do, I'm pretty certain I could get one open remotely with some Correspondence and Forces--assuming they aren't alarmed. I bet I could also get the keypad code from the surface thoughts of employees as they enter the building. That'd be handy to have, too.
We got to talking and it turns out that Silvertip can fly-hover. (Crap!) On the plus side, Val seems to think this ability is very rare among the garou and he can't fly very fast, so my emergency escape plan is not totally screwed. She then mentioned how she was considering getting a spirit to give me feathers so I could go flying with her and.... She was trying to do something really nice for me that would take a lot of effort, so I broke down and told her not to because I could already fly. She seemed a little downtrodden at that, but seemed convinced that flying with wings is far superior to flying with magic. I suspect, honestly, that she's right.
This led, in turn, to a discussion about how Val considers her interactions with the local garou to be a "good working relationship" but not a friendship like she felt she had with me. She then asked me where she stood in my eyes. Talk about a hard question! I told her that I feel that Mouse and Salem are kind of like extended family, seeing as how they adopted me into their tribe and all, but I don't know any family members other than them, so.... And that Val, since she claimed earlier in the conversation that I'd have made a great corax, had all but claimed she'd have adopted me into her family, I considered her to be extended family--just less scary extended family than Mouse and Salem. Val's good people. I think I managed to communicate that to her, too. In a roundabout way. Val, in turn, then told me that I might get a trio of young raven-shifters dropping by or following me around at some point in the near future. Apparently she told her mom (Mel or Melissa) about me and she told a few other coraxes (coraxi?) about me, and now I'm a tourist destination. I was a little peeved about that until Val said she'd given her mom the information in the event something happened to her and she failed to check in: so her mom could call me up to find out what happened to her daughter. Hell. How can I be mad at Val for that? Now her mom for blabbing? That I can be cranky about. I'll just make sure to be super boring if I notice raven-shifters following me around. I'll make it laundry day or something so they get bored and leave and I become a "don't bother to stop" attraction.
Finally, I suggested to Val that she should contact Mouse about that Tiger shifter and do an info dump on how it's got designs on the magical doo-dad in the park. Also, I encouraged Val to see about trying to help Mouse out in finding a contact for the young Bubasti the Glass Walkers currently have in their possession. Even though Val doesn't like the cats (because of the whole cats vs birds thing), I suggested that by making a good, helpful first impression with the young cat, she'd be corrupting him from what his teachers might later tell him about Corax. My first impression of the garou was shaped by Peter Kenward when he found me and took me under his wing: it took a long damn time to shake that stereotyping off, though I think he meant well at the time. Maybe Val can help influence this young cat? Val claimed she already sent Mouse some information, but she resent the e-mail just in case it got lost. (Can't help but feel that a lost e-mail might be something I inadvertently caused.)
To do list:
1) Scan the employees at Plasticorp and lift the security code from someone's mind as they enter the code into the keypad and it's in their conscious mind.
2) Do some research into what Plasticorp makes and their general business status.
3) Dreamwalk H. Crosby to see if she remembers anything about the driveby or if Plasticorp has gotten to her in some other way since that incident. (Wonder if that recent hospital break-in with no noticeable theft had something to do with all this?)
4) Rethink the lock on the sanctum so as to keep any shifter with that lock-opening magic out. (Maybe I could modify the door and frame so that the door is barricaded/locked by teleporting a steel bar into a slot inside the door/frame? Of course, the garou could then just batter the metal door down or smash through the wall/ceiling. Nevermind.)
