Tuesday night, on the way back to the Winnebago out in WWNP, I decided to pick up some stuff for breakfast the next day. Ended up getting breakfast sausage links to cook on the campfire forks--sort of like a wiener roast, but for breakfast. Wednesday morning, I had the urge to cook two campfire forks worth of sausages instead of one--more than I could really eat myself, but I had the urge to cook. Or so I thought. Just before the sausages were done, a Red Talon, John Smith (aka Monkeybrain), came out of the woods to say hi. I handed one of the two campfire forks to him and we....
Seriously? I had breakfast, in the woods, with a Red Talon. I think my head exploded.
Anyway, he does NOT seem to be a representative stereotype of his tribe. At all. He's apparently a member of a sub-group of the tribe called Whelp's Compromise. (Not a very distinguished-sounding name.) He could pass as a human--though a human with slightly odd mannerisms. It'd make me, personally, suspect something was up with him and maybe scan him to see what was up. But a straight-up human? They'd probably just think he was weird/offbeat/unusual/foreign.
Long story made short, a wolf pup escaped from some humans, turned out to be a garou, was claimed by the Red Talons, and now they're looking for a way at recovering other wolves in the humans' possession. I got asked to assist in locating the humans and/or facility. The cub had an ear tag of some kind, which I'm now in possession of, and I'm trying to trace where it might have come from and checking online lost pet/animal postings--since it looks kind of legitimate with an ear tag and all. I recommended to Smith that it would be prudent--and perhaps prevent a Veil breach--if the Red Talons had some assistance in this wolf rescue operation. I mentioned how a Glass Walker would be very useful and how I might also be able to bring in a corax, too. (Val'd probably be all over this.) Smith concurred. He's.... sensible. I hadn't expected that. A good reminder that one has to judge others not by stereotypes, but by individuals' actions.
I talked with Val very briefly Wednesday night. (Too short. Had more I wanted to discuss with her, but....) Mentioned the wolf rescue op and how she'd be welcome to assist. Val mentioned that the wolf that'd been killed recently for murdering humans indiscriminately had been a Talon and that a Walker, Riley, had killed her. I imagine there's some tensions lingering there, so I started looking for Riley--who I'd never met before.
Thomas showed up. Val let me know that she'd figured out that Thomas was the new kitsune. I don't think she'd pieced together that I'd already known for a while and hadn't told her. Val also said that Thomas had noticed the Euthanatos sigil I'd left by the fountain. May be time to take that down: no mage has shown up, so it either served its purpose, the mage that did it is dead/gone, or doesn't care.
I cheated. I fired up some Entropy and pulled out the magic 8-ball. "Will Riley be at the Walker's tenement Thursday at 8pm?" "It is decidedly so." I picked up some supplies to use as an excuse for showing up, popped over on Tuesday night--when I had a window of free time--and ta da! Riley! She all but jumped on the opportunity to do something for the Red Talons. Bonus? She's a scout, disinclined to be violent unnecessarily (especially towards humans), and seems to have her head screwed on straight--a real rarity among the garou! We discussed pinning the theft of the wolves on PETA, shifting the blame away from the garou and towards an idiotic animal rights group that's.... idiotic. Idiotic PETA is idiotic. I suggested ski masks and PETA or similar animal rights t-shirts. Riley suggested using a Starbuck's net access to post, as if from a PETA activist, bragging about how they'd pulled it off--and then anonymously reporting the bragging to the police. (Good idea!) The exodus will be problematic. Probably need to obtain a cargo van or truck. Rental would be best. Just need to rent it anonymously in the event someone notices the tags or something. I want to make sure this goes off well and Riley gets a big chunk of credit for it. That'll help her smooth over relations with the Red Talons, and that in turn helps the tribe.
I know I'm not really related by blood to the Glass Walkers, but.... It's really nice having a group to pull for. Almost like a family. Something I've not had since I was 11, before my parents divorced and our family fell apart. Or when I was in the Jedi Knights with Dana, Gwyneth, and Doug. God, it's been forever.
