Sunday night I decided to skip town and go visit Seattle to investigate those mysterious noises that've been going on. Nothing happened overnight, but right before dawn I heard it. I used some low-level sensory-based magic on it and... Yeah, you don't want to be listening to that. It's not going to kill anyone or anything like that, but it's got a subtly grating mental effect embedded in the low-spectrum sonic wavelength--right at the bottom of the range for what humans can normally hear. I'm not sure if that's intentional or not. I decided not to investigate further because 1) I'm here on my own and 2) anyone doing something that obvious is either an idiot about to get caught or powerful, smart, and likely to have put out some boobytraps for any mage or garou or whatever that arrives to investigate. Instead, I spent the morning shopping and hitting up all the small mom and pop coffee roasters in the area. $300 on coffee! I might have gone a little overboard.
I got back into town Monday evening, grabbed some groceries to help resupply the tenement's wares, and cleverly forgot to bring all that coffee I'd bought for the Walkers. I ran into Carmen in the lobby. We talked a bit. She seems.... very, very, very normal. Quite the contrast from Rina, honestly. A little geeky, sure. And maybe a little socially handicapped. But, really, just normal. Aside from the roller derby. Which I'd actually like to go watch one day.
Tuesday morning I did some realty prowling. It just so happened that I ran into my old landlord at a gas station convenience store in Kent Crossing. He was happy to see me, claimed I was one of his better tenants, and that he didn't like his current renters. Apparently they're habitually late with the rent and he thinks they're "up to no good" in his cabin. And he's got medical bills for his wife that need paying, so he's probably going to sell the place and liquidate that asset. But in this market? I told him I might be interested in buying the cabin and land if I could get a good deal on it and the renters hadn't destroyed it. He said they had 9 months left on their lease and he didn't think they were budging. I gave him my card and told him to keep in touch.
Okay. Fine. Maaaaybe I used a little Entropy (and the magic 8-ball and an extended ritual and some quintessence to make it extra spicy) to find a great place at a great price. Sure, I stacked the deck a little bit. But the guy doesn't like the current renters and, honestly, if I can run them out and buy the place--even at a discount in this market--I'd be doing him and his wife a huge favor. The renters, not so much. But I bet I can get them out of there in the next week or two.
Tuesday afternoon I popped into town to drop off some goodies (fresh-baked cookies I made and the coffee I'd picked up from Seattle) at the tenement. Ran into Flint and Thomas. Flint seems to be doing lots better. There was a minor ruffling of feathers between Thomas and Flint, but Thomas asked what the problem was and Flint explained that his speech impediment made him feel like he was less of a galliard. (That kind of explains a lot, actually.) Also, Flint definitely has a bit of talent as an artist. He asked me to pick him up some special sketch books, so I did. He was sketching glyphs, too. I wonder if I could get him to instruct me on some of those: not just the "this is the Glass Walker tribal glyph" deal that I already know.
Tonight, how about a little renter dream invasion?
