Unexpected road trips and unexpected visitors.
Friday evening, I got as far as Hanford, which is about two hours away. Plenty enough space for the time being. I found a camping area, hooked up, and set up a little warding alarm. If someone tries to track me down via magical means, I'll get tipped off about it with ample time to shut them down and move locations. I settled into bed and started reading to take my mind off things.
Got an e-mail from Val just after midnight. (Why did I know she'd stick her nose into this?) She nagged at me for being a jerk. I don't think people understand. This isn't "Oh, but I'm seeing someone on the side" sort of stuff that might merit a kick to the nuts and the end of a relationship. This is more along the lines of If-I-tell-someone-this-they-might-kill-me-on-the-spot stuff. There is a difference. And Garou have hair triggers. And Emma's an ahroun. Still? Yeah. It's not like I want to be a jerk on purpose.
I texted Emma an apology around 4am. She replied back that she wanted to talk and didn't want things to fall apart. Sounds like there's no danger of her frenzying or going out and telling the sept and assembling a war party. Women? They can get a bit crazy sometimes. (At least the ones I've dated in the past have. Granted, most of those were goth chicks from way back in the day....) You never know, and I prefer safe to sorry. But I think, at this point, it was safe to come back to St. Claire. I caught a nap, then fired up the Winnebago and headed back home a little after noon.
Silvertip dropped by that evening. She (I think I'm starting to wrap my head around the 'she' aspect) wanted to talk about the mage the garou killed on the bawn a few months ago. I told her I knew about it, and I probably filled her in on a number of things she hadn't been aware of. She offered to have the garou who attacked the mage come and apologize to me. Yeah. No. No thanks. Let's not introduce me to a garou who's okay with attacking mages. I prefer that she doesn't know who I am at all. Although? I do know it was Samantha who did it. To her credit, every time I've run into her since then, she's not been bragging about it--and no one seems to be offering her kudos either. So there's that.
She then asked about Naomi and KL. Both had lost their wolf--KL briefly and Naomi for nearly a decade. I told Silvertip that Naomi was fixed, and when he asked, I said Mouse had done it. Pressed for more info, I said I didn't know. She made a bit of a face--her facial gestures are a little off/alien, so she's harder to read, but I get the impression she didn't believe me. Later on, she pretty much all but called me on--and I pretty much all but admitted to it. Silvertip already knows I do stuff and let other people (like Val) take credit for it simply because people don't poke around when there's no obvious mystery in plain sight.
I explained, when asked, my theory as to what the de-wolfing was all about--use of magic to basically drain energy--long-term--from a living garou. Silvertip was understandably outrage and seemed to be on the verge of threatening me. I told her to ease back a bit and she did--bringing herself under control. She wanted to know if I could track the energy back to the mage that did it. Not from the knife. Not easily, at least. (I didn't tell her I had the knife upstairs in the closet. I should get that thing back to Val ASAP.)
I mentioned to Silvertip how I'd talked to Jacinta and offered to put sigils on the places of power in WWNP--minus the caern--if I was given an escort through the woods to locate the nodes, set things up, and skim off any surplus energy for myself. I don't think the look I got was promising, but it never hurts to ask. (Or does it?)
After Silvertip left, I got a text from Val about how the spooks who are in town, and who hauled Naomi in for questioning, were poking around Harbor Park. Val recommended removing the sigil I had on the node there, but if they're Technocracy? They'd seen the node long before they saw the "Claimed" sigil. Taking it down would be pointless and might just draw more attention. Wow. I really, really, really hope this is not the Technocracy. If it is, might as well write the park off. I'll definitely steer clear of that place for the near future. With luck, I'm just being paranoid.
Maybe it's the paranoia, or maybe it's just that I'm sick and tired of having giant chalk drawings on my greatroom's floor, but I cleaned up the whole place last night and most of this morning. Even oiled the wood floors. No trace of any crazy voodoo witchcraft anymore.
