I've been spending more time in the caern lately, as Brings-the-Pack, to both be present and on-hand if the shit hits the fan and to also spend some more time focusing on the spiritual energies therein. It's interesting, a node this powerful, in that the energies are so strong and the patterns.... well, there's a certain similarity to what happens at smaller nodes, but I suppose with so much more power, the subtleties are not so subtle. (But beneath the subtleties are more subtleties. Worlds within worlds within worlds.) It reminds me a bit of chaos theory.
Some interesting things have happened recently at the caern, too. Justin showed up and tried to get a bunch of people together to go kill a wraith, but it was very obvious his bravado had overtaken his common sense. I wasn't going to call him on it--just protect Ghost if she opted to participate. Nolan pointed out there were flaws and Ghost smacked Justin and stormed off. Justin made some comment about Ghost not being that valuable, and I finally stepped in and told him that he was being overconfident and that he'd have been aged a whole lot more than just 5 years if I hadn't quietly knocked the wraith that was on him off of him earlier. (I didn't want to share that information as I.... the garou take a lot of pride in their capabilities, especially ahrouns in their fighting skills. And I prefer to not take credit for much of what I do. Partly because why should I care because I'm not judged on my merits like the garou are and partially because I prefer not sharing what I'm capable of as I suspect many garou might start to fear me.) I think that sobered Justin up a little bit, but he does seem hellbent on fighting something. Anything. The garou are getting frustrated. I hope they don't end up turning that frustration inward on themselves. I also corrected Justin in that, if Ghost is somehow a key or clue to defeating The Nothing, then her life was more valuable than his, more valuable than mine, and more valuable than all the lives at the sept and the caern itself. He's young. He's myopic. He's brash and boastful and full of swagger. I hope he can get that in check before he kills himself--or possibly others.
Another evening at the caern, I got asked by Rabbit to tell a story about her father, Turtle. Trace and Nolan were there, and Rabbit seems to idolize her dad, so.... I told the story about how Turtle had captured a Spiral kinfolk for questioning and how a pack of three Spirals showed up. But I spun things a lot, removing that I'd even been around or helping and playing up how Turtle seemed to intentionally play the trio of Spirals so as to escape their trap instead of him being caught a little flat-footed and nearly dying. I made Turtle look like the bad-ass who out-foxed three powerful Spirals. And I intentionally did so in front of the two garou in the hopes that they'd think that Turtle was not someone to be trifled with. And Rabbit has her idol/father. Turtle showed up as I was wrapping up. I think he caught enough of the story to know what I'd done. You're welcome, fox-man. Turtle then gave Rabbit a lesson about Kitsune culture, allowing those gathered to listen in. They seem much more focused on magick/elements than the garou. The lecture definitely provided some insights.
I bumped into Briari at the caern today. She offered me a signed-by-Hamill-and-Lucas laserdisc of Star Wars: A New Hope. The one without all of Lucas's later tinkerings. This was to apologize for her eruption the other week. Told her I couldn't carry it and she said she'd leave it at the sept compound for me to pick up later in a different form. (Yeah. I am really, really, really wary about that.) She revealed that the kinsman, Peter, had been noticed snooping around in the Tower, how he was brought to the Queen and fell in love (uh oh), how Blue/Renegade had had his inside Spirals abduct Peter, and how Peter was now in the Spiral's possession--with the promise that he'll be returned alive to Briari, but she is not to try and track them. She also said that Renegade/Blue had been able to detect supernatural things, which included her using a gift, so.... I imagine actual magick might very well tip the Spirals off, too. The problem here, which Briari seems well aware of, is that if the garou attempt to rescue Peter, they'll likely piss off the Spirals working on overthrowing the Queen, which is going to result in more garou casualties when that fight finally happens. If the sept sits on its hands and trusts Blue/Renegade to return Peter as he's promised to do so.... Would he do that? Regardless, I'm worried Peter may have spilled a lot of information to the Queen and the Spirals alike. Time to double-check the wardings and alarms for my cabin.
I had to cut my discussion short as I got an emergency call for help from my apprentices in Portland. More vampire troubles. Their apartment had been made and they were being watched. I worked some illusions from afar to allow them to escape. So... now I have two TEMPORARY house guests.
