April 27 (morning)--Val and I speculated about many, many things.
I was at the farmhouse, out near the pool in the back meadow, for most of the morning. I don't know why exactly, but that area has some kind of pull recently. The stillness of the pond's water as opposed to the constant motion of the little creek that runs through my property. Val dropped by and I told her that it sounded like the garou had a plan--and I told her what it was and her role in it (do a flyby scouting run in the umbra--not Dreamwalking Naomi). She'd already done a flyby and said the area around the building was definitely hostile territory, but that a good-sized war pack could likely handle it.
Talk turned to the larger events: the riots in NYC and Boston. Val mentioned that there are spiral-like designs being made to represent the movement, and that someone killed a guy in Harbor Park and left a spiral design there, too. Will it spread to here? Elsewhere? Is the spiral representing the BSDs? I thought it looked too coordinated/orchestrated to be BSDs. And why leave a calling card that only other shifters would be likely to recognize? Val said she thought it might be Ratkin, which are all about chaos (hence the riots), and trying to get the garou (who, let's be frank here, are not the sharpest of tools in the Shed of Intellectual Capacity) to jump to conclusions and go to war. Something she said made me remember that The Suits had been asking crazy questions of people earlier, which also included questions about people who followed a rat god.
Rat god = ratkin?
I don't know. I've only met one ratkin. I have no idea where she went to. And I'm glad she is gone because she was stalking me for some reason. I have no idea if she knew what I am or not, but I sank the boat I was living on as a result of my coming home one day and discovering her aboard.
Where was I? Oh yes. Ratkin. Val says no one really knows how many of them there are. If we assume that X the population of garou expressed as a percentage of the known wolf population, and if we assume that the ratio of shifters to wolves is constant, then Y would be the population of garou expressed as a ratio relating to the rat population. Which would be ENORMOUS. Or would that have to be garou population as a function of wolf and human populations? That's less scary, but.... Different. Hmm.
It's an interesting theory. I'm not sure how plausible it is, though.
Val asked about my trip. I told her I had a chimera spirit sidekick now. I didn't tell her about the ring. I'm not sure I want to. Oddly enough, she did mention that one of the tigers was back in town: Karuvar. Damn. I'd guessed it was Baukhain. Val said she was going to do me a favor and not tell Emma that the she-tiger was were my mind immediately went. Personally? Emma has nothing to worry about.
After Val left, I was suddenly feeling tired. I checked out the barn/garage. No one there. So I went up to the loft to take a quick little catnap.
April 27 (evening)--Meeting Dakota and Alicia. Pissing off Reed.
I woke up about 9 hours later. The sun had set. Thomas and Reed were talking with Dakota (a new CoGgie, I learned after introducing myself. Recently came back to the sept after about a decade's absence. And then another CoGgie turned up and introduced herself. Alicia. She knew my name and remembered me from when she was around about a decade earlier, too. I, frankly, couldn't recall who she was. Alicia seems very sure of herself. Even mentioned challenging for rank--despite having just gotten here. That's a level of ambition that I suspect would make even a Shadow Lord blush with shame. She seems like she's working on the rioting thing, coupled with the thing in Harbor Park. She asked me to look at a picture and tell her if the guy was wearing contacts or not, but she showed me a picture of someone's drawing of a person with cat-like eyes. I told her I couldn't tell something like that from a picture of a drawing of a person, but that I'd keep an eye out for the guy. I mentioned that she might want to talk to Val and Rhys, but she already had. I didn't bother mentioning the ratkin theory as that seems like nothing but crazy speculation at this point.
The CoGgies left. Reed, Thomas and I were idly talking. Reed asked if I had a job for him to do. I said "mow my yard" as a joke--and then I told him he had it backwards: he was supposed to ask me to do stuff for him. Like tell me to go to Dairy Queen to get him a malt. He did. I laughed and told him to get his own malt. He got this look of... just absolute anger... and stormed off. These younger ahrouns? They /really/ do not seem to have a handle on their newfound rage. They lack the control that Emma has. Maybe Silvertip to a lesser extent.
Thomas and I made some small talk about garou and parents and how it's rough for both. Then I decided to go home.
April 27 (night)--Vulture capitalism, and the hardest thing about studying how LOLcat moves. . . is getting LOLcat to move.
On the drive home I thought about the riots and how the symbol seen in Boston and NYC was just seen here in Saint Clair the other day--with no riot here yet. This... has a feel to it. I did some speculating as to what commodities would sell if the riots were to broaden. I sat down, poured over the market data--past and present--and then I sat and dwelled on the information for a while, playing out scenarios in my head, and then I queried my Magic 8-Ball.
QUESTION:
"Will the rioting spread to other cities and escalate?"
MAGIC 8-BALL SEZ:
"IT IS CERTAIN"
I sat there, looking at that response for a bit, and then contemplating how messed up it was that what prompted me to act was the desire to insulate the Walker's business against a crazed stock market--not a concern for humanity.
And then I made the adjustments to Terminus' stock portfolios. And then modifications to my personal stock portfolio.
I can do something to protect Terminus and its employees. I can't do anything to prevent the coming tide. I don't even know where to begin.
And I still feel dirty for the potential profit that will be made in the days to come.
To take my mind off of what I'd just done, I decided to study how LOLcat moved. I'd read that cougars are related more to domestic house cats than they are to lions. Theoretically, that meant studying how LOLcat moved might provide me some insight into how a cougar moves. Problem? LOLcat tends to just lay about all the time unless there's food involved. Cat treats. Tossing cat treats for him to collect and using some very subtle Mind magic to get a feel or how he moved. That worked fairly well. There's an interesting coordination among all four legs. It's subtle and I hadn't noticed it the other week when I spent the night as a cougar. Something to try in the future.
I hiked the plastic tote full of food staples out to the cave, then spent the night there again. I remember when I used to be petrified of the woods at night.
