A few days ago I donned a black hoodie and some sunglasses to go hang out near Harbor Park and scry the area for anyone who was paying it undue attention or for any other supernaturals or hunters who might have heard about Fitz's frenzy. Nothing turned up before Val did. We chatted a little bit and I filled her in on Mackenzie and Ramos--I think I forgot to tell her about that whole thing and me ordering them both out of the park. Ghost then turned up. I apologized for running off after Fitz's frenzy and said it wasn't my finest hour. Both she and Val said that it was the right thing for kin to have done.
I got a call from Briar, Vlad, and Shade--the cabal of young Hollow Ones I "adopted" down in Portland. Vlad's been trying to teach the others a little more about Forces, but they've hit a wall. After a short chat with them, i figured I'd pull a couple books from my collection that they might find to be useful. I'd bring the books to them and let Vlad scan them in with a setup I'd bring with me while I gave Briar and Shade some pointers and advice. I ought to visit these guys more often: they're only 6 hours away and Portland is a nice vibe to it.
While I was at the Hermitage eyeballing a few books, Slug turned up with a large leg bone. (Femur?) Said it was from a fomor. He's planning to carve it and make it into a wand that will allow him to do mage magick. I... He wants to be a warper so bad. I pointed out a few things, like how it's not likely to succeed and that if it were possible to be a garou and a mage, then the garou would likely have heard about it by now. Slug suggested that if a garou ever succeeded, they'd have likely hidden their ability lest they be killed. This in the context of us having talked a little beforehand about Fitz, the park, and Slug's belief that power corrupts individuals and makes them jaded to things like people dying. He explained that's why the garou weren't concerned about a human's death, and he thought I was being a little naive about being concerned about it myself. I should be harder and more jaded, having been kin for so long. But I'm not. And while I certainly have become more powerful than most garou, I still choose to care about humanity.
I don't think Slug's theory about power and callousness holds true. Certainly not universally. I think the difference between me and the garou is that part of their power is barely controlled and sometimes escapes their control--frenzies. I don't have that problem. (There's paradox, but that's more of a backlash upon myself than others.) I think this callousness is likely a coping mechanism the garou use to justify what happens when they slip up, It's hard to look at yourself and say "I'm to blame for that." Not when there are other alternatives available.
Speaking of alternatives, Slug also pitched a theory he had at me--that the Big Bang was caused by something other than Gaia, and that Gaia and the Triat are essentially byproducts of something larger. (Slug continues to surprise me by his ability to think outside the box that the other garou seem to find themselves trapped in.) From what I gather, he's pretty close. I cautioned him that it might be inadvisable to share his thoughts with other garou as that might be considered blasphemous. He seemed aware of that and said that's why he was sharing it privately with me instead of announcing it in the middle of the caern.
Slug seems to be picking up some insight about mages from somewhere. I asked what his source was, and he claimed it was The Oracle--his Chimera pack totem. I've been having Kargamis, my chimerling familiar, range out and about to discuss a theory I'd had (and say the theory came from a warper) with any intellectual spirits who might listen and provide some insight. The little guy might have had a conversation with The Oracle, because some of what Slug said sounded like a watered down version of what I'd told Kargamis to go spread--and tied in with mages. Maybe I need to go have a talk with The Oracle? I'll ask Salem about that.
