The houseboat's batteries--and in fact every battery on the boat--was dead this morning. I suspect this is punishment for playing with electricity the other night. I imagine I might have tried juicing the batteries with a bit of magic, but I suspect that might have made things worse in the long run. Just let it run its course, Nick. Thankfully the runabout has an electric motor (dead now) and a pull-start gas motor (which works), so I can get to and from shore.
When Val got up, we talked briefly about the scouting trip. She was /pissed/ at Rajani for having that origami sparrow chasing her around the other night--spying on her. Val gave me the remains to examine, thinking I'd be interested in that. (I am.) The spying paper dot is gone, though. Val seemed puzzled about the electricity that zapped the sparrow initially. I think I managed to shift blame about that over to the bird's mechanism/magic. Val also mentioned that she got the mental impulse to run (innocent whistle) and then later a completely different impulse to stay (that'd be the baddies), which she resisted. I pointed out that we knew about Dan Perry and Melty-Face and the bane she'd encountered earlier in the spirit world. We knew the bane could mentally influence peoples, so maybe Dan and Melty-Face can also do it--but they just failed to coordinate on this one. She actually had a good excuse for not starting up the computer, too. She was worried that mucking about with the computer might trigger some unknown defense mechanism. She seemed to think she might be able to fly off with the computer if she did so in the war-raven form.
Val's annoyed. She thinks they've been tipped off and will be preparing for something--or perhaps moving on. Shit. I may have blown the entire scouting trip by peeking into that room. Now I'm puzzled as to how to get the information I got to Val without her getting all suspicious. Probably will have to spin a yarn about seeing something on a stakeout. It's not like I didn't get a ton of practice doing this exact same thing when I worked for the police.
I gave a neighbor $200 to pull my houseboat back to the docks at the marina. Electricity is back on now thanks to electrical plugs. Everything is on 'charge.' If that doesn't fix it, I'll be blowing a small fortune on replacing all those deep-cycle marine batteries.
