I met up with the new mage in town, Charley. We have a fuck-load in common, and the meeting went very well.

We're both kinfolk, although he is very much legitimately kinfolk and not pretend kinfolk like I am. We're both Orphans, devoid of a Tradition.

Some Cult of Ecstasy mages considered taking him in, but he thought it was a bad fit. A Euthanatos mage has been trying to recruit me for over a decade, but I've thought it was a bad fit, and my brief stint as a Hollow One was unsatisfactory to me. (Too much ritual trappings and not enough substance.)

Charley has limited experience working with other mages and the other Traditions. I have substantially more experience working with other mages and Traditions and have been in a cabal and was a member of a Chantry and still have a couple rather tenuous contacts with some mages in other areas.

I Awakened when I OD'ed, died, and came back from the dead. Charley Awakened when, by 18, he failed to turn into a werewolf, and they shot him to see if that would make him change.

My father has no clue I'm a mage and acts as if he never wanted me. Charley's garou father seems ashamed of him being a mage, but sent him away when he was exposed as such instead of having him killed.

I've been a mage for over 16 years. He's been a mage for about 6.

I'm a generalist with specializations in Forces and Mind magic. He's specialized in Correspondence and Entropy and dabbles here and there. (We could probably do some ritual magic together, especially with Correspondence and Entropy.)

We're both wary of being exposed to the garou as mages.

We've both decided that we're doomed insofar as long-term relationships go.

We're both nervous about how abrupt, xenophobic, unsubtle, and violent the garou can be. Particularly when it comes to killing humans. And mages. I told Charley about how Chloe, Wendigo kinfolk, was slaughtered by them long ago. Being kin will not necessarily spare him nor me, though his father's influence spared him earlier--but his father is Not Here(tm).

We both consider garou to be sledgehammers, whereas mages are typically more about subtlety and finesse. (Ironically, shortly after we had this discussion, both our phones rang off the hooks due to the garou getting into a street brawl, in werewolf forms, with some Black Spiral Dancers, and exploding cars and fires, and dead, Veil-breaching bodies. Shelby was wanting Charley to give people a ride--so they could bleed all over his car's interior--and I told him how I'd had that happen once loooooong ago. Mine was from Val, detailing the situation, how there was a metis corpse that needed disposing of, and how the police radio was on fire with talk of bears and/or attack dogs loose in the city and gang warfare and what a mess the Industrial area was.)

We both thing Val is a pretty valuable ally to have, and the garou Charley knew from Europe had been working with a couple of the raven shifters in the past. I'm going to ask Val if she'll do that trick where she can detect if a person is human or not so Charley can study it and practice not subverting the magic--if he's able to like I can. I'd like to work on dodging that truth-telling magic they have that apparently Val has as well. And the magic they can use to locate someone.

Charley's in town as a chairman for a Walker-based start-up company called Terminus. Interesting. Wonder if I can get a paycheck out of that through giving work-from-home advice on stock trading via a little Entropy--beating the market average by 4-8% relatively consistently? That'd let me ditch working divorce cases and limit myself only to missing persons with my Private Investigation job. Would probably mean a pay increase, too.

I told Charley that Salem and Mouse both know about me, and that it took years before I revealed myself to Salem--and Mouse ended up being a reveal due to necessity (though with Salem's recommendation and endorsement) after I nearly amputated my leg experimenting with Forces and needed a healer. Apparently, no one here--except Val--knows about Charley. And I don't intend to tell Salem or Mouse about him, either. He's no threat to the Walkers.

I told Charley about how I used Time and Entropy, combined with a magic 8-ball, to determine whether or not to meet with him--and how that can prove to be a good means of gauging risk and courses of action. He seemed impressed.

I think I'm going to have to take Charley under my proverbial wing. He seems like a good guy, and a decent but not-very-experienced mage. We have very similar ethics and interests (although he's a little afraid of Forces magick). He just needs a little guidance and information to bring him up to speed. And Lord knows I owe that to him because of the people in the past who'd done the same thing for me.

Maybe this is an opportunity to start a cabal?
