Talked with Mr. Lee this past Monday at the Tenement. He was tipsy and I was a little borderline myself--enough that I knew not to be out driving, so I intended to crash in my 3rd floor apartment there. Anyway, Mr. Lee mentioned birthday, I figured it was his, but he said it wasn't. That left the conversation open for me to ask how old he was--and that I'd heard (from Val) that the kitsune often live loooong lives. Apparently 140 years long in Mr. Lee's case. That certainly gives one perspective and reinforces my belief that he's /very/ competent and dangerous. Moreso than he lets on. (Not that I do the same thing or anything like that.)

I also asked Mr. Lee--since he can detect magic--if he'd ever run into things or heard about things that registered as being magic but were not mages. He claimed that the garou and other shifters registered sometimes. Also vampires, spirits, fomori, fae (never met one of those, but Ila said she had) and witches (the kind that do rituals but not "true" magic). Quite a broad listing there. Wonder if any of those apply to Naomi?

Tuesday the moon was more than half way towards full, so I built a bonfire and crossed over into the spirit world near my cabin. I worked a little fire magic again, arcing and shaping it, then transmuting the energy into different forms. I think--with all the access I've had to the spirit world where there's no vulgar displays of magic--that I've been able to gain a greater understanding of bending focused energies to my will. It seems like the natural next step is to focus energies over a larger area. Yes, it's a simple enough thought, but the "how" aspect.... It's like juggling. You look at a juggler juggling 3 balls at once and it's a piece of cake to explain what's going on: he's rotating the balls out fast enough so that the air time gives him time to use two hands to keep three balls in the air simultaneously. No biggie. Then you try and do it yourself and.... not so easy. In my situation, it feels like I've gotten very competent at juggling three balls, and now I want to juggle 6. Or 9. Or 12. Easy enough to conceptualize, but not so easy to pull off. I simplified things: a jet of flames directed from pre-existing flames, but trying to spread them out. The best I could manage was to defocus the jet of flames further out--and that was just by....

This is hard.

I've gotten three responses to the job flyers I posted at Edgewood and the Tenement.

1.) May Lin, Shadow Lord (strike one) kinfolk who's an excellent employee at Terminus and.... I've got zero reservations that she couldn't run this place like clockwork. But she only wants part-time, so someone else would need to man the phone and that'd be no new revenue coming in from PI legwork. We'd probably need to hire a second person to do PI legwork.

2.) Sewall. Ragabash. Silver Fang. Cliath. He seems professional, detail oriented, and smart, but.... angry. And he kind of has all the personality of a dead fish. He has worked with Val before and seems to respect her, so there is that. He'd probably be bad for customer relations and as a "face" for the business.

3.) Ky. Ragabash. Shadow Lord (strike one). Cliath. He's kind of young, so I doubt he'd qualify or pass as a licensed PI even if I got the Walkers to cook him up a fake ID. I know him the least of all three. Flint sees something in him--enough to pack with him, at least. Although Flint hanging out with him... is probably not the best recommendation.

I sent Val an e-mail with the candidates' queries and my own comments. They have to work for/with her, and I need to keep Val happy, so I'll let her review and make a recommendation or two as to who she feels comfortable working with--or NOT working with. Heck, if I can get another ragabash gumshoe with that rock trick that locates people by name? I wouldn't mind that one bit. And we don't necessarily have to license them either--they just have to let Val take all the "public" credit for doing the work.
