Val dropped by the day after the incident I'd had over at the cabin. She'd found a kitten by the road earlier that day. Mom had been run over and the rest of the litter starved to death. We'd talked earlier about pets and I'd mentioned how I'd like a cat again someday and Val took it upon herself to bring me one. (She apparently flew it over to the cabin, stork-like, in a bit of cloth.) But the thing is, after I knocked over half the shit in the cabin by accident, I have to wonder about the safety of a cat--or even a person--being anywhere around me. And when I declined the offer of the cat, Val said she'd just eat it later.

I didn't think she was serious, and she just put the cat aside and carried on as if it weren't there at all. I pretended to not care about it either, but after an hour, I could tell it was so weak it was going to die if it didn't get care. So I gave Val a ride back into town and took the cat to an emergency vet. Now I'm out $240 bucks and apparently this cat needs to be fed every 2-3 hours. And its ass wiped with a warm towel every so often to help encourage it to take a shit. Loaded up on hand sanitizer and anti-bacterial soaps and whatnot. I also dug up Evil's (my cat that died a couple years ago) automated litterbox, water dispenser, and feeder. I've taken the kitten to work with me and it's been riding shotgun on a heating pad in the squad car. Val, to her credit, is also tending to the cat out in the car when I'm stuck in the office. I guess she isn't utterly heartless.

A little Mind magic makes it easier to guess what's making the kitten unhappy or upset, so I'm usually able to get it to settle down. A little mental nudge of encouragement every so often help making feedings or nap time easier, too.

So I have a new kitten as a sidekick/pet. Probably ought to work on coming up with a name for him.
