As I promised Mr. Porcupine Spirit the night before last, I got to work last night doing a ritual to create another umbral shallowing so it could cross back over. I know what I'm doing is ultimately vulgar magick in the realm (instead of coincidental in the umbra). But it's a pretty minor working, so I'm not terribly worried about it. The ritual worked surprisingly well this time! It only took about two hours! I don't know if that was luck or familiarity, buuuuuut I'll take it either way. As soon as the world's linked, I told the porcupine spirit to go through. It lumbered towards the rift and WHOOSH another spirit came on through from the umbra to the realm. (Porcupines: not renowned for swiftness.) This one was a small chimera spirit, though it took me a couple minutes to figure it out as it looked like a sentient rolling rock (about twice the size of a bowling ball). I put two and two together when I communicated with it via a mind link. Chimera spirits have a uniquely.... Let's just say their headspace is very, very, very different. And this one liked taking different forms. It changed from being a rock to being a tree stump to being one of my chairs on the porch.
I texted Emma for help. She showed and by then it was about 2am. I quickly filled her in on things, told her I probably had enough time to send one of the two back, and I went with sending Porcupine back first because (1) it wanted to go back ASAP (changed its mind about the realm, I think), (2) the Chimera spirit wanted time to explore the realm still, and (3) Emma mentioned helping the chimera might earn her points with Salem's pack. So be it. Emma went umbral to keep the spirits away from the portal I'd be making (after she used the Winnebago's mirror to do so--I'd forgotten that they need mirrors to cross over--kind of like how most mages use foci). It took damn near 4 hours to pull it off this time, and let me tell you I put my all into it that last hour because I knew if I didn't get it soon, it'd be all for naught. Finally got the worlds to touch, Emma kept the spirits on the other side at bay, the porcupine spirit toddle-hustled on through, and the portal collapsed. WHEW!
While I waited for Emma to return, I touched the chimera spirit's mind again to mentally communicate with it. (Yes. I talked with a lawn chair.) I told it I would send it back after the sun set, that Emma would show it around the realm (because it was eager to see that), that Emma would protect it so long as it cooperated with her, that it needed to stay near Emma so she could get it back on time, and to not talk about me to any garou. It agreed--and I was glad because I hadn't slept in over 30-some hours and I did not want that spirit mucking about in my house while I was asleep. So I pulled out my Kindle Fire and showed it images of hats. "Could you pretend to be a hat?" I asked as I showed it a couple hundred images from the web. "Just one?" it replied. Hoo boy. Potential veil breach if Emma takes it out in public. Emma showed up about then--from the south instead of near the Winnebago where she'd cro..... Oh, she didn't have a mirror on her in the umbra. Probably used the stream to cross over. (I should drink from that stream next time I'm in the umbra.) I filled Emma in, then I headed for bed. So. Damn. Tired. Need to get some rest before I do that again tonight when Emma and the spirit get back.
I got the impression Emma is not particularly comfortable interacting with spirits, which is somewhat ironic as Garou are innately spiritual creatures by virtue of their nature.
