Sun, Jun 15--Reflecting on past ley lines, nodes, and Nightfall Chantry.
Jacinta cleared me to enter the woods and bawn, with an escort, to locate the two nodes I knew about. I knew where one was as I'd been there before. The other? No idea. Only that the ley lines that had tied in with Nightfall Chantry at the Knight's Rest Inn had connected with it. Back before David Cox left, the ley lines collapsed from lack of maintenance, and the Knight's Rest Inn burned to the ground--taking Nightfall Chantry with it.
I went to town to the Historic District where the hotel/chantry used to be. There's an office complex there now. Modern with a veneer of stone supposed to be in theme with the old part of town. I sat down at the Osprey fountain node, closed my eyes, and dwelt upon the past. The chantry--now gone. The stories. The conversations I'd been involved in and overheard as well. (God, I used to be such a self-important, egotistical jerk. Even when I wasn't able to do anything but just sense the existence of magic.) And then I was floating and back in the chantry some 8 years ago. I altered my perceptions to take in Prime sources and instantly located the ley lines. All of them. I finally found the ley line I was looking for, and I Corresponded my senses along it until I located where I needed to go--deep in the woods. I can find this place in the present--if the node is still there. (I wonder if the slumbering earth elemental is still there?
Mon, Jun 16--Reconnecting with two lost woodland nodes
Contacted Salem and Emma to serve as escorts and to keep me from inadvertently traipsing across the territories of any packs or tribes. We bumped into Red Talon territory about a mile away from the first node. I had to reach out with my senses and--rather than taking something off the surface that might have been missed, I looked underground and found a small rock with a clean-shorn face--just like the boulder atop the hill from whence it came. I teleported it to me. Actually, that's not accurate. I tried to teleport it to me AFTER I skimmed the available free quintessence from the node (holy crap, it's stronger than the Harbor Park node!), but my magick failed me. I tried again, this time teleporting the rock and neighboring dirt. That worked. And I doubt anyone will ever notice something has been taken.
The next node took a good, long time to hike to, but there was no one claiming that territory so I didn't have to attempt any more remote teleporting. (It's a small trick, but I don't care to amass paradox when there's a shitstorm on the horizon.) I spent some time selecting a good stone and meditating with it in the heart of the node (which feels as strong as the Harbor Park one) while collecting its tass. Salem and Emma and I then trekked out of the woods. Dawn was happening by the time I got home.
Tue, Jun 17--Perchance to dream
Bed happened most of the day today. I think I just doubled my access to tass. I need to give some to Ila. We can do a cabal of two.
Wed, Jun 18--A trip to the Hermitage
More reading the Chorister's book on Correspondence. I feel like I'm just on the cusp, ,but I need to go back and review an earlier chapter. Again.
I needed to clear my head. The moon is nearing the halfway point. I thought of crossing over to just dick around with some good old fashioned Forces when I remembered that Dirk had that quaint library of his own. I went and had the place to myself for a while, so I looked at artwork. The tapestry with knights fighting alongside werewolves is both quaint and humorous.
Slug showed up. We talked. He apparently found a mage book and tried to cast a spell--to no effect. I wrangled the book as Thomas arrived. It's an Order of Hermes mage discussing.... Seriously rudimentary stuff Forces stuff. I think this is less a book and more a self-discussion of theories. My knowledge of Forces is well beyond what this Order of Hermes mage knew, and that's that tradition's specialty area. (Another unexpected reminder of my growing competence despite the odds stacked against me all these years.)
Slug discussed his theory about tracing down an old spirit--like Helios, the sun--and asking it a shitload of questions about the nature of life, the universe, and everything. It's actually not a bad idea, though I suspect (and informed Slug as much) that an eons-old spirit would likely see a garou as something inconsequential. Or an impatient nuisance. He seemed cognizant of that. Smarter than the average bear, that one is.
After Slug left, Thomas and I talked a bit. We agreed that if one of us found something the other wouldn't want the garou laying hands on--something that could be devastating or stolen from kitsunes or mages, we'd alert the other of its existence and spirit it out of the Hermitage and back to its proper owners. The mage book Slug had read? Effectively worthless save to only certain members of the Order of Hermes. I do wonder how the hell Dirk came into possession of it, but it's nothing earth-shattering, so I'll let the Hermitage keep it. Thomas, on the other hand, seemed more concerned about stolen artifacts--not so much books.
I talked to Thomas about him lending aid to the sept. He said he'd offered before and that offer was still on the table. I'll mention it to Jacinta, who--according to Thomas--had talked about potentially granting him access to the caern in the past.
I then mentioned that I might be speaking to the caern's totems soon--or not. Depending on what the response is to Jacinta's discussion with them about me assisting the caern and paying a visit to it. Thomas was impressed. I asked for and received some advice as to what to do and expect, which was all rather ambiguous. There's no formulaic approach to this, but Thomas stressed honesty. I'd planned on that anyway. Thomas also stressed that these are powerful spirits who are what they are and can't really change. (How limiting! What a horrible existence!) So, to sum up, spirits that will act predictably weird and uber-powerful. The weight of all this hit me and I have to admit I freaked out just a little bit. Then I stopped freaking out about it because there's no point in doing so. Plus, the totems apparently are bound to the caern. They can't leave. If the sept is overrun, they're stuck there for the amusement of the Spirals. With all these other caerns falling, and someone offering to help, I suspect they'll be predisposed to listen. Negotiate.
Of course, there's also nothing more dangerous than a cornered animal. And the same may hold true for caern totem spirits.
