The trip to Portlandia gave me a lot of time to think about what to do at 3am when/if that thing that scared Kargamis in the umbra turns up again to write on the walls. Initially, I was thinking a simple little alarm ward that'd let me know when it entered the area. Now things have gotten more complex.

Step 1: Create a modified "Can't find me" wonder like I'd done earlier when I bolted from Saint Claire after thinking The Suits were Technocratic agents. I took the tiny little padlock off my luggage, located the long-unused little key in a zippered pocket, and rejoined them. Two as one. I used some thread from my emergency sewing travel kit to make a necklace for the tiny key, then I employed a relatively simple effect, a blend of Correspondence and Prime, to affix my "location" to  the lock. After juicing the effect with a shot of Prime to keep it going on its own, I separated the lock and key. Anyone actively searching for me should home in on that lock instead of me (key). So. Hopefully that will work.

Step 2: Rent a cheap-ass room at a nearby, small, cheap, run-down no-tell motel with cash and a fake ID. Done and done. I bought a week's stay.

Step 3: Place lock under the (gross) mattress to complete the "he's in bed at 3am" illusion for any tracker-type thing.

Step 4: Ward the room. I used the ash, mixed with a pinch of charcoal from the previous writing on the walls, to create a proximity alarm AND a little something extra: a spatial disorientation maze. In talking with one of the mages from San Fran, she'd mentioned using wards not to keep things out, but to keep things in. Like summoning circles. (Why didn't I think of this before?!?) But I don't want to catch this thing. (I suspect I might not be able to.) I just want to slow it down a bit. With a maze. Yup. Basically a magical retooling of the architectural maze from "Inception," but with spatial/mental disorientations--a blend of Correspondence and Mind magick, focused at the 3am writer, using its own charcoal evidence as a linking ritual component. I wrapped it up, charging the ward with a dash of Prime and quintessence, about 15 minutes before 3am. (Cutting it close!) Then, after putting up a DO NOT DISTURB tag on the door, I hightailed it back to my hotel across the street and a few buildings down. With luck, I'll actually be able to get a look at this thing. See what we're dealing with here.

And with no luck, it'll just appear in my hotel room anyway. Thaaaat'll be fun. But I've a good working knowledge of the electrical capabilities of the outlets in the room, and I can push those as hard as they'll go without blowing a circuit.

3:15am. Nothing happened tonight. Ah, well.

That gives me time to study the electrical capacity of the transformer on the street outside the window to my room. Just in case. And a chance to sleep before meeting up with the Hollowers again.
